Like many designers, I collect art and design pieces! Also like many designers, that collection sat in cardboard tubes, reinforced envelopes, and cardboard boxes… tucked away until one day (some day, any day now) they would be framed on a wall.
What’s on the wall…
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
This is probably deserving of a longer post sometime, but back in 2011 an alternate reality game was run to promote David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” where clues were given out online leading to real world locations. One day the location was a few blocks from work, so over lunch I was able to get this pressed flower from the film and a signed note from David Fincher.
The Animation Show
To the right is a program and a ticket stub from “The Animation Show” which screened at my college, Columbia College Chicago, my senior year.
The Space Shuttle Discovery - Kevin Dart
Kevin Dart is a pretty awesome artist and director who’s even worked on concept art for Big Hero 6. In 2015 he made a series of science prints for a show in California. While I wasn’t there, I was able to grab a signed print of a night launch of the Discovery online. Coincidentally I attended the night launch of STS-33 of the Discovery when my family was in Florida as a kid. I have a mission patch ready to frame and put up next to this someday.
Blend 2017 - Chris Anderson
I was lucky enough to attend Blend Fest in 2017 (that’s me walking away from the camera at 0:02). It was a blast and I hope to get back to Vancouver some day. For now, I have the frames of this Chris Anderson animation loop on my wall to remind me of the fun times there.
Soak - Heikala
A while back Heikala became one of my favorite artists. Her watercolor work is outstanding with fantastic settings (some subtle, many not). I buy her calendar every year (bonus that there’s a version with weeks starting on Monday, as it should be). This small print of Soak came with an order and it needed a place on my shelf.
Storyboard Templates from 1975
We were clearing out some unused office space in the basement of my work at Code42 for a shoot one day and we found a stack of these templates from 1975 distributed by Comprehensive Service Corporation. They were too good not to frame.
Grandma’s Cloak - Heikala
Another print of Heikala’s - Grandma’s Cloak. This one was gifted for a delay in shipping for her 2022 calendar and her book “The Art of Heikala.” Loved the invisible cloak and thought a float frame would be a nice nod to the art. (I do have to straighten it in the frame, though…)
The New America - Nando Costa
In 2013, Nando Costa released the short film “This is America” that was animated, then laser engraved on wood blocks, and later rephotographed for the final filming. By backing the project on Kickstarter I was able to get one of the original wood blocks. This is frame 410.
Precipice - Rob Sheridan
I’ve always loved the art direction and designs of Nine Inch Nails albums. So it makes sense that Rob Sheridan is another one of my favorite artists as he was the art director for the band from 2000-2014. This small 5x7 print of Precipice was a holiday card that I couldn’t just toss. So it sits in a small frame next to…
analog(oblivion) 020 - Rob Sheridan
Rob’s experimental glitch work is so unique, combining analog and digital techniques. The print ogf analog(oblivion) 020 is from a series for How To Destroy Angel’s debut and only album “Welcome Oblivion” (Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music) and features Trent Reznor’s eyeball. I didn’t realize it when I hung the picture but it’s staring at everyone on every work meeting in on from just off to my right on camera.
What’s next?
I’ve got some more wall space to the right of all of these frames. Which is good since there’s still more art I want to get up on the wall which might require some custom framing. But considering a few of these prints took around 10 years to get on the wall I’m not sure when the next round will start. I’m hoping I’ll just keep adding one-by-one… but I won’t hold my breath.
