Seriously, what am I thinking?
I just wanted a nerdy project to dork around with one day…
…something separate from my portfolio site where I didn’t feel the need to be professional.
…something “simple” to write out some thoughts occasionally.
…a platform I felt like I owned and controlled.
But why…?
Because I miss the Internet before social media! We used to have stupid blogs and forums. People connected sites through web rings. When you found sites you liked, you would save them to your feed reader (RIP Google Reader) to see what was new.
I want to recapture some of that and it sounds like I’m not alone. Forums seem to be making a comeback. There’s a push against social media as being the sole place to post. And we’re all worried our platforms of choice will one day be enshitified.
So I finally put this vanity domain to use beyond holding a small about page. I got the static site generator Hugo up and running so I didn’t need to worry about WordPress vulnerabilities. I set up Obsidian so I can write in a decent markdown editor. And I’ve spent more time in a command line than I had in a long time.
Sitting in my living room with my laptop opened, listening to music, and writing this out just feels right. It brings me back to 2004/2005 in a lot of the best ways.
And what will be posted?
I’m fickle. So I’ll write about a mix of things, but I’m trying to start simple:
- Thinking - Thoughts, ponderings, and productivity
- Making - Random projects and things I create (like this blog)
- Playing - Board games, TTRPGs, video games
There will probably be some crossover, and I’m sure I’ll expand or refine this list as time goes on. But for now this feels like a good place to start.
So here we go…
I call it Side Quests. Will I keep up with this? Maybe. Is it fun for now? Definitely.
